This is my newest band, a true nordic constellation: Peter Dahlgren (S), trombone; Anders Banke (DK) , saxophone; Ivar Asheim (N), drums and Peter Danstrup (DK), bass and composition. In this new constellation we want to develop and deepen the scandinavian jazz concept – challenging it’s more aesthetic and serious aspects without taunting the past.
The cover
The CD cover, the name of the band and the music it self has nothing to do with each other. But there is some truth: there are 3 scandinavian countries represented. Waste in the meaning ‘not wanted’, ‘no good’ is somehow connected to music, especially rebellious bands like Wasted Youth, Wasted etc. But the cover itself is taken by Georgian Photographer Dmitri Ermakov, and I saw it at an art exhibition (The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art).
The alphabet
At the same time I couldn’t help but fall in love with the Georgian alphabet. I see it as a mixture between Cyrillic, Persian and maybe also Indian Sanskrit. We (including Niklas Antonson) had to try and merge with the latin letters, so it is a kind of modulated font.
The music
We play mostly my compositions, but – for the first time in many years – here we also play music by other composers. Which in this case means older music. But also older music of my own is in the book. We try to find our own interpretations of the compositions, for example ‘New Orleans Bump’ recorded in 1929 by Jelly Roll Morton. In this piece I have composed an intro and an outro, and we have added and excluded some of the parts in between. My composition ‘Lost and Found’ is from around 1975.
